Here's a DIY version of the flavored, spreadable Gournay cheese originally from France.

Recipe information

  • Total Time

    40 minutes (including chilling)

  • Yield

    Makes about 1 cup

Ingredients

8 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 small garlic clove, quartered
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 cup chopped parsley leaves
1 tablespoon chopped chives
Crackers or toasts (for serving)

Preparation

  1. Step 1

Combine cream cheese, butter, garlic, and salt in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until smooth. Add parsley and chives and pulse a few times until well combined. Pack mixture into a small bowl, ramekin, or glass jar. Cover and chill at least 30 minutes. Serve with crackers or toasts.

  2. Do Ahead

    Step 2

Cheese can be made 5 days ahead. Cover and chill.

Cooks' Note

To add a citrus note to the cheese, incorporate 1/8 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest with the herbs. Or add 1/8 teaspoon (or more) freshly ground black pepper for a little spice.

  • I make this all the time. A great staple to have for unexpected guests or a snack. It is also great with cucumbers or celery.

  • I just made this recipe and it is delicious. It was so easy and I love that it can be made ahead of time. This can be served on cucumber rounds or GF crackers for a gluten free version although baguette slices are a perfect accompaniment.

  • I took this to a party last night, and brought most of it home! Maybe the appetizer offerings were more appetizing, or perhaps I needed the added citrus notes or pepper. I thought it was good as did my husband, though.

  • Has anyone tried something similar but NOT with cream cheese? I live in a country where I can´t get a decent cream cheese; what substitutions might there be?

  • To Michelle in Ecuador: if you have mild (creamy) plain yogurt available you could strain it to make yogurt cheese, and that could perhaps work....
